Experian unveils Cashflow Data Bureau to power the next generation of underwriting

COSTA MESA, CALIF., (Oct. 06, 2026) -Experian®, a global leader in data and technology, today announced Experian Cashflow Data Bureau, Inc. The new consumer reporting agency (CRA) operates under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), enabling financial institutions to leverage consumer-permissioned cash flow insights at scale to help support more informed underwriting decisions and responsibly expand access to credit.

Experian Cashflow Data Bureau was unveiled to hundreds of business leaders during Experian’s annual Vision conference in San Antonio.

The launch comes as nearly 1 in 5 consumers lacks access to or has damaged credit[1] and Experian’s research[2] shows 60% of consumers who’ve previously been denied credit, or received less favorable terms than expected, believe the outcome would’ve been different if lenders had considered their recent income and banking activity alongside their credit history.

When cash flow insights are paired with credit data, Experian’s analysis shows a predictive performance increase of up to 40%. At the same time, these insights can help lenders increase approvals by up to 25% without adjusting their risk tolerance.[3]

Driving industry adoption of cash flow insights

While financial institutions have expressed interest in leveraging banking information to gain a more complete view of consumer financial health, lenders have highlighted a need for a single, trusted provider to help simplify and operationalize the use of these insights.

Experian Cashflow Data Bureau establishes Experian as the only provider to deliver an end-to-end cash flow decisioning ecosystem backed by decades of credit, consumer reporting and analytics expertise. From consumer-permissioned bank account data aggregation and report generation to analytics, scoring and decision-ready insights, Experian Cashflow Data Bureau helps financial institutions adopt and integrate cash flow insights into decisions through a single, trusted provider.

“We’ve spent decades building the trusted data, analytics, technology and expertise financial institutions depend on every day," said Jeff Softley, CEO of Experian North America. “With Experian Cashflow Data Bureau, we’re applying that experience to cash flow and making it easier for our clients to adopt these insights with confidence and at scale. By helping lenders understand a more complete picture of consumers’ financial lives, we can power more-informed decisions and ultimately help more consumers access the financial products and services they need, when they need them.”

Experian’s cash flow ecosystem

Experian Cashflow Data Bureau serves as the enabling foundation for Experian’s suite of cash flow solutions, which includes:

Consumer consent and connectivity enables consumers to securely connect and permission access to their bank accounts through Experian when applying for credit. Cash flow consumer report organizes, categorizes and aggregates consumer-permissioned bank account transaction and balance information into a standardized consumer report that’s regulated by the FCRA, giving lenders a consistent foundation for incorporating cash flow information into lending decisions. Cashflow Categories™ converts consumer-permissioned bank account transaction data into standardized, decision-ready intelligence using dynamic machine learning models that process tens of millions of transactions each day. Cashflow Attributes and Cashflow Score transform categorized bank account transaction and balance data into predictive insights that help lenders better understand a consumer’s financial capacity. Through Experian Activate™, Cashflow Attributes can also help participating lenders connect consumers with new financial offers. Credit and Cashflow Score is the industry’s first score that will combine consumer-permissioned cash flow insights with Experian’s differentiated data assets, including traditional credit, trended data from Experian Information Services and Clarity Services information. Custom analytics and consulting services: Helps lenders integrate cash flow insights into existing underwriting strategies through the Ascend Analytical Sandbox, optimize decisioning models and accelerate deployment through Experian Decisioning. Cashflow Attributes for commercial lenders: Helps turn business bank transaction data into predictive attributes, providing an additional view into how a business is operating and supporting more informed commercial lending decisions.

“Cash flow data, aggregation and score usage has been growing steadily and are having a positive impact on expanding credit approvals,” said Craig Focardi, Principal Analyst at Celent. "However, lenders’ cash flow underwriting businesses are still scaling, and integrating multiple vendor solutions can increase implementation time and costs. An end-to-end cash flow solution can help lenders accelerate solution implementation time and increase returns to investing in cash flow underwriting."

Experian Introduces Power Profile Plus Enhancements to Cut Early-Stage Mortgage Credit Costs and Expand Score Choice

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 12, 2026 — Experian® today announced enhancements to its award-winning Power Profile Plus™ for Mortgage solution. Through the new enhancements, lenders and loan officers can reduce early-stage credit costs with the speed, simplicity and score flexibility they need to support consumers on their path to homeownership.

Power Profile Plus delivers a full Experian credit profile with VantageScore[1] 4.0 through a soft inquiry, giving lenders comprehensive credit insight and a score upfront without requiring a hard inquiry at the beginning of the mortgage journey. With Experian’s latest enhancements to the solution, lenders can now request unlimited eligible follow-up soft inquiries during the application and qualification period, and add additional scores at the lender’s discretion, without an additional Experian credit-profile charge.

“As the mortgage industry expands its use of modern credit scores, our focus is on making that transition cost-effective and easy to implement,” said Michele Bodda, Group President of Experian Housing, Verification Solutions and Employer Services. “Our clients have told us they need a full credit profile and a score up front to assess consumers quickly and confidently. Experian’s Power Profile Plus enhancements deliver decision-ready insights while lowering early-stage costs. This creates a simpler path to VantageScore adoption and helps lenders make more-informed decisions that can ultimately support more consumers on the path to homeownership.”

The enhanced Power Profile Plus workflow

Power Profile Plus provides a straightforward mortgage credit journey:

Start with the full Experian credit profile and VantageScore 4.0. The information is delivered through a soft inquiry, allowing the lender to assess the consumer before moving to a hard inquiry. Revisit the profile as needed. The lender may request unlimited eligible follow-up soft inquiries during the application and qualification period without another Experian credit-profile charge. Evaluate the FICO Score[2] as needed. If the lender chooses to assess a FICO® Score, the applicable score charge applies, but Experian does not charge again for the underlying credit profile. Move forward when ready. When the borrower and lender are ready to proceed, the lender can move from a soft inquiry to a hard inquiry and continue toward underwriting. Standard hard-pull credit-report and score pricing applies.

Supporting the shift to modern mortgage scoring

The announcement follows the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s expansion of VantageScore 4.0 availability to all approved Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lenders. The change gives more lenders the opportunity to evaluate modern scoring models as the mortgage industry works to improve affordability, expand score choice and responsibly broaden access to homeownership.

A consumer-friendly experience

The Power Profile Plus enhancements come as consumers increasingly expect lenders to consider a broader picture of their financial lives. Experian research found one-third of consumers would actively seek out a new lender if they learned their current lender relied on legacy credit-scoring models that do not incorporate rent and utility payments, while 52% said they’d be more interested in pursuing homeownership if lenders considered additional positive payment history when evaluating mortgage applications. [3]

Power Profile Plus allows lenders to assess consumers using the full Experian credit profile through a soft inquiry. This can help consumers explore mortgage eligibility and potential options without beginning the process with a hard inquiry while enabling lenders to work more effectively with borrowers during the qualification period.

Expanding lender choice while managing costs

Experian’s broader mortgage scoring strategy gives lenders additional ways to manage costs and evaluate modern scoring models.

VantageScore 4.0 is available as a standalone mortgage origination score for $0.99. In addition, through the Experian Score Choice Bundle, lenders can access VantageScore 4.0 and FICO® Score 2 in a single transaction, with VantageScore 4.0 available at no cost when a FICO Score is obtained in 2026.

Experian expands instant income and employment verification network through new integration with Workday

Costa Mesa, Calif., Sept. 24, 2026 — In a move to broaden the verifications landscape and support faster, more informed decisions, Experian®, a global data and technology company, today announced a new integration with Workday, Inc., the enterprise AI platform for HR, finance, and IT. The integration will significantly expand the real-time income and employment information that can be accessed through Experian Verify™ and provide organizations with greater choice and flexibility to complete their verification needs.

The integration builds on Experian’s broader strategy to expand the Experian Verify network through payroll provider integrations and employer-direct connections. Through this continued expansion, Experian Verify has a path to coverage of more than 80 million records, representing over half of U.S. payroll employees.[1]

During important moments, including applying for a mortgage, auto loan, apartment lease or another financial product, consumers benefit when businesses can verify income and employment information in real time. When that information is available instantly and securely, businesses can reduce reliance on manual verification processes that often require additional documentation, slow down HR teams, delay approvals and create unnecessary friction for consumers.

By integrating with Experian Verify, Workday customers will gain greater choice and flexibility in how they fulfill employment and income verification requests while reducing the administrative burden for HR departments. With decades of experience managing sensitive consumer information and supporting some of the world’s largest organizations, Experian brings the scale, data stewardship and verification expertise employers need to participate with confidence.

At the same time, by increasing the number of records that can be accessed for instant verifications through Experian Verify, employees can move more quickly through important life events by removing the need to manually provide documentation.

“Whether it’s buying a home, purchasing a family vehicle, getting a job or navigating another important financial milestone, behind every verification request is a person trying to move forward,” said Michele Bodda, group president of Experian Verification Solutions, Employer Services and Housing. “Our integration with Workday gives employers another way to support those moments while helping reduce the verification burden on their HR teams. Experian brings decades of experience responsibly managing sensitive consumer information, giving employers a trusted partner and employees a faster, more seamless verification experience.”

The Workday integration represents a significant step in Experian’s strategy to build a more open and comprehensive income and employment verification ecosystem. With the addition of Workday, Experian Verify now offers payroll data from many of the nation’s largest payroll providers in addition to millions of unique records, giving businesses broader coverage and greater choice for instant income and employment verification.

“HR teams shouldn’t have to become paperwork chasers, and employees shouldn't have to put life on hold waiting for a verification to clear,” said Nancy Weitl, vice president, HCM product management at Workday. “Our work with Experian is one more way we're helping take that burden off both sides, so verifications happen quickly and securely.”

Experian Verify has a growing verification ecosystem, combining payroll provider integrations, employer-direct records and consumer-permissioned verification into a single platform. This diversified approach gives organizations broader coverage and greater flexibility to complete their verifications needs.

Workday customers will have the ability to verify income and employment through Experian as part of the newly announced Workday Total Benefits solution in late October.

Experian Launches Credit Cards App on ChatGPT, Offering a New Way to Discover Card Offers

Key Highlights

Explore relevant credit card offers from Experian's trusted partner network directly within ChatGPT. Compare annual fees, introductory bonuses, rewards rates, introductory APR offers and ongoing APR ranges in seconds. Continue to Experian for credit card offers[i] matched to your Experian credit profile. Supports Experian's vision of making trusted financial marketplaces more accessible through AI.

COSTA MESA, Calif., Aug. 27, 2026 — Experian today announced the launch of the Experian Credit Cards app on ChatGPT, expanding its growing portfolio of AI-powered financial experiences and giving consumers a new way to discover and compare credit card options through a simple conversation.

"Consumers expect financial experiences to be as intuitive as the technology they use every day," said Debbie Hsu, Executive Vice President of Product, Experian Consumer Services. "By bringing our credit card marketplace into ChatGPT, we're making it easier for people to explore their options, compare cards with confidence and take the next step when the time is right. This is another example of how Experian is using AI to create simpler, more helpful financial experiences."

Consumers are increasingly turning to AI to answer financial questions before making important decisions. Whether they are looking for a cash back card, travel rewards, a low introductory APR or no annual fee, the research process often begins with a question. Until recently, finding the right answer typically meant sorting through search results, opening multiple browser tabs and comparing offers across multiple issuers’

websites. Consumer AI chat apps have enabled users to consolidate their search, and with Experian now managing offer detail display within ChatGPT, consumers can access accurate, consistent, and issuer-aligned offer information.

Bringing Credit Card Shopping Into the Conversation

Consumers want to understand which products fit their goals, whether they are building credit, earning travel rewards, reducing interest costs or maximizing everyday purchases.

The Experian Credit Cards app on ChatGPT helps simplify that decision. With only minimal input, consumers can review relevant offers from Experian's trusted partner network and compare the details that matter most, including annual fees, introductory bonuses, rewards rates, introductory APR offers and ongoing APR ranges, where available.

Each offer is presented with clear, consistent information, making it easier to evaluate options before continuing to Experian for offers matching their Experian credit profile. The experience in ChatGPT gives consumers an informed starting point and a faster path to finding a card that meets their needs.

"Our goal is to help consumers find credit card products that align with their financial goals and make those products easy to choose, get and use,” said Michael Coleman, Chief Marketing Officer at Credit One Bank. "Experian's Credit Cards app on ChatGPT creates a new way for consumers to discover and compare card options through a trusted, conversational experience. We're excited to be part of an innovation that helps consumers make more informed decisions before they apply.”

How It Works

Consumers who choose to take the next step can view offers matched to their Experian credit profile. Those who elect to receive offers are securely directed to the Experian website, where they can review eligible credit card offers. Experian members can also view any pre-approved offers[ii] they are qualified for, and cards labeled No Ding Decline™[iii],which won't affect a consumer's credit scores[iv], if they are not initially approved.

Advancing Experian's Consumer AI Strategy

The Experian Credit Cards app marks another step in Experian's strategy to bring trusted financial marketplaces into the AI platforms consumers are already using. From loans to insurance and now credit cards, Experian is building conversational experiences that help consumers move from asking financial questions to evaluating real financial products with greater confidence. By combining trusted marketplaces with AI, Experian is creating a simpler way for consumers to discover opportunities while maintaining transparency and consumer choice throughout the process.

Future enhancements are planned to include more personalized credit card experiences and expanded lender participation, continuing Experian's investment in AI-powered financial services that help consumers make informed financial decisions.

Hybrids Continue to Gain Ground Amid Elevated Gas Prices, According to a New Experian Automotive Report

Key Highlights:

Hybrids comprised 16.80% of new vehicle financing in Q2 2026, an increase from 12.99% in Q2 2025. In Q2 2026, hybrids had the lowest average monthly payment for new loans across all fuel types at $646, followed by EVs at $692, and gasoline-powered vehicles at $721. The average refinance rate this quarter was 7.97%, in comparison to a 10.40% average original rate, saving consumers an average of $83 a month.

Schaumburg, Ill., August 27, 2026 — As consumers navigate elevated fuel costs and continued affordability pressures, new Experian Automotive data shows vehicle shoppers increasingly gravitating toward hybrid models. According to Experian’s (LSE: EXPN) State of the Automotive Finance Market Report: Q2 2026, hybrids accounted for 16.80% of new vehicle financing during the quarter, an increase from 12.99% in Q2 2025. Meanwhile, electric vehicle (EV) market share declined from 9.21% to 8.15% over the same period.

“With the EV tax credit expiring last year, hybrids seemingly have become a more attractive option for consumers, particularly for those looking to save some money at the pump,” said Melinda Zabritski, Experian’s head of automotive financial insights. “But we’re also seeing hybrids offer greater financial flexibility, likely driven in part by manufacturer incentives that are making hybrids more cost-effective than in previous years.”

Hybrids carry a lower monthly payment than other vehicle segments

Interestingly, hybrids carried the lowest average monthly payment for both new loans and leases across all fuel types. In Q2 2026, the average monthly payment for a new hybrid vehicle loan was $646, followed by EVs at $692, and gasoline-powered vehicles at $721. For new leases, the average monthly payment for a hybrid was $566, while gasoline-vehicles had a monthly average of $602, and EVs came in at $641.

Meanwhile, from a total market perspective, data from the second quarter of 2026 found the average loan amount for a new vehicle climbed $1,715 year-over-year, reaching $43,610, and the average monthly payment increased $16 to $765 compared to the previous year. However, the average interest rate for a new vehicle dropped to 6.35% this quarter, from 6.79% last year.

On the used side, the average loan amount saw an uptick of $875 year-over-year, coming in at $27,852 in Q2 2026, and the average monthly payment increased to $542 this quarter, from $532 last year. Though, the average interest rate for a used vehicle fell to 11.19%, from 11.57% in the same time frame.

Refinancing continues to be a pathway for consumers

As interest rates continue to decline, consumers are exploring refinancing as a way to lower their monthly payments. In fact, the average refinance rate in Q2 2026 was 7.97%, compared to a 10.40% average original rate, which saved consumers an average of $83 a month.

Notably, credit unions offered the largest average payment savings when refinancing a vehicle, coming in at $102 in Q2 2026. Meanwhile, banks offered an average of $65 and finance companies presented a $38 difference.

“The automotive finance market continues to evolve, and refinancing can give consumers another avenue to alleviate the monthly payment for their vehicle,” Zabritski continued. “By reaching qualified borrowers with competitive finance options, lenders can help consumers save on financing costs while creating opportunities to strengthen customer relationships and build long-term loyalty.”

Additional findings for Q2 2026:

New leasing declined from 24.04% in Q2 2025 to 23.75% in Q2 2026, while new loans increased from 57.45% to 59.57% in the same period. The average payment difference between a new vehicle loan and lease was $148 in Q2 2026. Thirty-day delinquencies increased to 2.39% this quarter, from 2.32% last year and 60-day delinquencies grew to 0.90%, from 0.87% during the same time. Banks continued to lead the total automotive finance market share in Q2 2026 at 27.15%, followed by captives (26.26%), and credit unions (20.38%).

Experian brings personalised credit scores to ChatGPT in a UK first

London, 20 August , 2026: For the very first time, UK consumers can now access their personal Experian Credit Score within an AI platform, following a major upgrade to the ChatGPT Experian app announced today.

Consumers are becoming more comfortable with AI to access a wide range of information and services and money management is no exception, with nearly two-thirds (62%) of regular ChatGPT users saying they turn to AI tools for support in helping them reach their financial goals.*

But when seeking information about credit scores, AI platforms can only offer generic, general answers, based on publicly-available sources which may not be accurate. The upgraded Experian app solves that issue, bringing people’s unique 1250 Experian Credit Score to ChatGPT and giving them greater insights into their score history.

Experian powers the majority of lending decisions in the UK, including 8 in 10 credit card applications, making the Experian Credit Score one of the most important indicators consumers can access when understanding their financial position.

The upgrade marks the first time UK consumers can get secure, authenticated access to their personal credit score inside an AI platform. By connecting their Experian account within ChatGPT, users can:

See their personalised 1250 Experian Credit Score - displayed securely in the Experian widget, in seconds

Understand what makes up their score - a clear breakdown of the information used to calculate a score, helping people better understand what makes up their Experian Credit Score

Track their score history and score band - context on how their score has moved over time, without leaving the conversation

Compare current account offers – a clear comparison table to help customers pick the best current account

The upgraded app has been developed with security and privacy as a priority. Consumers' credit scores are displayed within Experian's secure, logged-in experience. The solution is designed so that this information is not exposed to, or used by, the AI model when generating responses. For those looking for deeper insights, users will be directed back to Experian’s app and website for their full personalised credit report with tips to improve their score.

This responds directly to what consumers expect. Research found 91% of regular ChatGPT users would find an Experian ChatGPT app helpful, and 86% say they would trust it, with data privacy the single biggest factor in that trust.

In addition, 38% of users aged 18–34 say learning more about personal finance is one of their top financial goals, but this group remains among the least likely to have checked their credit score.

By embedding personalised score insights into a platform they trust, Experian is making its trusted capabilities available everywhere consumers choose to engage. This expands access to trusted financial education, while creating a pathway to the Experian app where people can take action to better understand and improve their financial health.

Edu Castro, Managing Director of Experian Consumer Services, UK&I, said: “Today we're giving people secure access to their own personalised score, with a clear explanation of what's behind it, inside the AI platform millions already use every day.

“As people increasingly seek money advice on a range of different channels, it’s important the information they get is accurate and genuine. This is fundamental to our strategy of meeting people wherever they choose to engage with us and helping make credit understanding truly accessible, especially for younger consumers who are growing up with AI as their first port of call for financial questions.

"Experian helps power the majority of lending decisions in the UK, so giving people easier access to their Experian Credit Score helps them better understand one of the key factors lenders use when making decisions."

To get started, users can now download the Experian app from ChatGPT's plug-in page and connect to their account by tagging @Experian and following the secure sign-in flow. New customers can sign up to Experian for free via the App Store or Google Play.

The Experian app in ChatGPT can be found here.

                                                           ENDS

Notes to Editor

*Research designed and analysed by Experian.

Data collection conducted online via the Qualtrics platform between 8th May and 19th May 2026, with respondents recruited through Qualtrics’s research panel network.

A total of 691 UK adults who actively use ChatGPT and have the ChatGPT mobile app installed on their phone completed the survey. Quotas were applied for age and gender to a sample representative of UK ChatGPT users.

New Experian report reveals AI trust gap as consumers embrace AI but resist high-stakes decisions

Costa Mesa, Calif., August 19, 2026 —Experian®, a global data and technology company, today released its 11th annual Identity and Fraud Report, highlighting how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the digital economy while simultaneously creating new opportunities for fraud. The findings point to a growing challenge for businesses: building trust in an economy where both people and AI agents are increasingly participating in digital transactions.

The report found 31% of consumers have already used AI tools to shop and transact online, and another 23% would consider doing so. However, confidence drops sharply for higher-stakes decisions with just 21% comfortable relying on AI for completing travel-related purchases and only 17% for financial services decisions. Meanwhile, more than half of people say they’re concerned about AI-enabled scams, underscoring the trust challenges that could shape the next phase of AI adoption.

“AI is transforming digital interactions in ways that are creating both exciting opportunities and new risks,” said Kathleen Peters, Chief Innovation Officer at Experian. “As we move toward a human-not-present era where consumers increasingly rely on AI to help make decisions on their behalf, the organizations that will succeed will be the ones that make trust visible. Establishing identity and trust, whether for a person or an AI agent, is essential to every digital interaction.”

Fraud losses continue to climb

Consumers reported $15.9 billion in fraud losses in 2025, up 27% from the previous year, according to the FTC. The actual losses are likely much higher as many fraud cases go unreported. Experian’s research found that nearly 1 in 5 people suffered personal financial losses from online fraud in the past year, and another 15% say fraud was attempted but prevented. Seventy-two percent of victims say the experience left them feeling more vulnerable online. Phishing scams were the most common consumer fraud incident reported (26%), followed by fake advertising (19%), package delivery scams (16%), credit card theft (16%), unauthorized charges (15%) and fraudulent bank transactions (15%).

Businesses are feeling the impact as well, with 60% reporting fraud losses are somewhat or significantly higher than previous years, and 77% expect fraud management budgets to increase.

AI creates both opportunity and risk

Companies identify AI-generated phishing attacks as their leading AI-related fraud concern (53%), followed by AI-assisted first-party fraud (51%), document forgery (45%), automated bot attacks (40%) and deepfake voice scams (37%).

To combat these threats, businesses are rapidly adopting AI to strengthen defenses. Eighty percent of organizations report using machine learning or generative AI within fraud management environments to help identify suspicious activity, improve identity verification and enhance fraud detection capabilities.

Identity and security remain critical to trust

As digital interactions become more automated, consumers expect both security and convenience. Seventy-one percent say it’s important for businesses to accurately recognize them online, while nearly 50% report greater trust in organizations that can do so without requiring repeated authentication. In addition, 84% say they’re willing to complete additional security steps when needed to prevent fraud.

The findings suggest trust is becoming a competitive differentiator in an AI-driven marketplace. As AI agents play a larger role in digital transactions, companies need trusted ways to verify both the consumer and the digital agent acting on their behalf. To address this challenge, Experian recently launched Experian Agent Trust™, extending its expertise in identity and fraud prevention to help verify not only the person, but also the AI agent acting on their behalf.

Experian’s identity verification and fraud prevention solutions helped clients avoid an estimated $19 billion in fraud losses globally in 2025. To learn more, watch Experian’s 2026 Fraud Trends: Navigating AI and the Future of Digital Trust webinar here.

Methodology: Experian’s Identity and Fraud Report is based on two major surveys conducted in the U.S. with HarrisX in April 2026. The first asked more than 2,000 U.S. consumers about their online interactions and expectations regarding security and customer experience. The second survey asked more than 200 businesses in the U.S. about their strategies for effective fraud management, customer identification and authentication, including investments related to security and customer experience. Companies ranged in size from $10 million to above $1 billion in revenue.

Experian: Consumers expect modern mortgage underwriting; one-third ready to walk away from lenders using legacy credit scores

COSTA MESA, CALIF., (AUG. 18, 2026) — While a credit confidence gap is keeping many prospective homebuyers out of the market, a growing awareness of expanded data and modern credit-scoring models is sparking a wave of consumer self-advocacy. According to new research from Experian®, one-third (33%) of consumers claim they’d actively seek out a new mortgage lender if they learned their current lender relied on legacy credit-scoring models that don’t incorporate rent and utility payments.

Experian’s research also showed the inclusion of everyday financial habits in scoring models could bring sidelined buyers to the table. More than half (52%) of consumers said they’d be more interested in pursuing homeownership if lenders considered additional positive payment history, such as rent and utility payments, when evaluating mortgage applications.

Gen Z is leading the charge

This demand for credit modernization is being driven by the next generation of homebuyers, who view a lender’s use of broader data in decisioning as a primary competitive differentiator.

According to the study, 3 in 4 (76%) Gen Z consumers over 18 say the type of credit scoring model a mortgage lender uses would influence whether they’d stay with that lender or consider another option.[1]

“We’ve long advocated for the use of expanded data, including things like rent and utility payments, to help increase access to homeownership,” said Michele Bodda, President Experian Housing, Verifications Solutions and Employer Services. “We’ve invested heavily in these areas and this research shows consumers, and younger borrowers in particular, want to be recognized for their complete financial picture. As Gen Z becomes a larger share of the mortgage market, mortgage lenders have an opportunity to differentiate themselves by embracing expanded data and modern scores that support more comprehensive credit evaluation while making the dream of homeownership a reality for more consumers.”

The research comes as nearly half (48%) of Gen Z consumers over 18 say they expect to be in a position to purchase a home within the next four years, and nearly two-thirds (62%) are aware that mortgage lenders are beginning to gain access to newer credit scoring models.

This consumer demand aligns with the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s (FHFA) ongoing transition to modern scoring models for mortgage decisions. Models like VantageScore® 4.0[2] consider alternative data, including things like rent and utility payments, making them especially beneficial for consumers with limited traditional credit histories.

To help accelerate industry adoption, Experian recently announced $0.99 pricing for VantageScore® 4.0 for mortgage originations, building on its previously announced Score Choice offering that provides lenders access to VantageScore 4.0 at no additional cost when they obtain a FICO® Score.[3] Together, these initiatives are designed to lower adoption costs, expand lender choice and support the industry’s transition to modern credit scoring.
